On 26 October 1472, Bishop Werner of Schwerin granted a 40-day-indulgence to those who would contribute to the new clock of St. Mary's Church of Rostock. Commemorating the 540th anniversary of this declaration, which, in abundance of other sources, serves as a certificate of birth to the astronomical clock, the City of Rostock, the University of Rostock and the Lutheran Inner City Parish, together with the German Society for Chronometry, invite to this Symposium.
The symposium will continue the tradition of similar events held in Gdansk (1988, 1990, 2003 and 2008) and Stralsund (1994). The lectures of the symposium will focus on following topics:
The political, economical and religous situation in the 14th and 15th century
The function of public clocks in mediaeval cities
The state of knowledge in astronomy in the 14th and 15th century
Findings regarding layout, function, history and preservation of certain monumental clocks
Mechanical and technological features, together with findings of art history on mediaeval astronomical monumental clocks.
Opening: Thursday, 25 October 2012, 2.00 p.m., Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) Rostock, with reception by the arrangers
Ending: Sunday, 28 October 2012, with a service in St. Mary's church. The sermon will be held by the Bishop of Mecklenburg Lutheran Church, Dr. Andreas von Maltzahn
